Fabrice Poussin
He works for a living in the makeshift cabin
a simple task at the click of a mouse
to let you by or check credentials.
Behind him, memories of another glory
he might choose to rest; instead
he greets the strangers at his gate.
With the warmer days, I roll the window down;
a brief gesture to acknowledge this kind man
and the simple words he does not hear every morn’.
It’s up the hill, beyond the guard
to a day of work, stress, aches, and tears;
while he plays on his iPad, I fear for my life.
Yet, like a bright explosion of stars, he smiles
and everything changes as the sun rises anew
upon hours overcast with unbearable darkness.
