There they went,
a huge pack of dogs,
not wild ones, but domestic –
big dogs, little dogs, dogs of
every size, breed and color
all running through a grassy field
and down a slope, sniffing every
inch of the way for the milkweed,
and I wondered what they wanted
with milkweed and what they
would do when they found it
as they were dogs in a field
and not monarch butterflies
on migration to South America.
Then a few of the dogs lifted
their noses from the ground
to sniff the wind and they caught
the scent of beer and reversed
course and began running for
the beer and suddenly all the
dogs were sniffing the wind
and I swear they were making
a mass migration for the beer
and when I woke up, I wondered
how many of them would
get divorced or end up on
the list for a new liver.
